Volunteers from the Smith and Sandin Lab participated in the San Diego Oceans Foundation 27th annual Oceans Gala Benefit – Oceans for the Future: A Sustainable Seafood Celebration. They worked with local celebrity chefs helping them to prepare delicious seafood tastings as well as talk to a variety of guests about sustainable seafood.

In the fall of 2010, researchers from SDSU, SIO, and other coral reef ecologists collaborated together for a research cruise to the Northern Line Islands, home to the some of the most pristine coral reef ecosystems still thriving in the world today.

The San Diego Oceans Foundation (SDOF) is hosting its 27th Annual Oceans Benefit Gala – Oceans for the Future: A Sustainable Seafood Celebration on April 26 at SeaWorld’s Turtle Reef & Shark Exhibit. The mission of the SDOF is to promote ocean stewardship by leading community-supported projects that enhance the ocean habitat and encourage sustainable use of the oceans resources.

New Ocean Acidification Sensor Installed at Scripps!
Members of the Smith Lab head the effort to install Scripps Institution of Oceanography’s (SIO) first ocean acidification monitoring system. This monitoring system will provide essential data that will allow researchers to monitor changes in ocean chemistry over time and help them better understand the effects of these changes to local marine ecosystems.
