The Smith Lab takes full advantage of the convenience of being located in sunny Southern California on the San Diego coastline through a variety of coastal California research projects. Scripps Institution of Oceanography offers unique opportunities for conducting marine research right outside our lab’s doors, including access to a fully-stocked dive locker that provides tanks and gear to our scientific divers, AAUS scientific diver training, and the private Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, which provides a steady flow of seawater to our facilities as well as an ocean access staircase for research via scuba and a mechanism for launching boats and sensors directly from the pier.
