JOB ANNOUNCEMENT ALERT!

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION AT SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UCSD – BIOLOGY SECTION

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO, http://scripps.ucsd.edu) at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher to work with an interdisciplinary research team focused on the topic of Kelp Forest Ecology, Ecophysiology, Carbon Cycling and Sequestration Potential.

The incumbent will work with a team of researchers to identify gaps in knowledge in measuring carbon flux and sequestration potential in natural and/or restored kelp forest systems, conduct primary research in the field and/or the lab focused on climate change vulnerability of southern CA kelp forests and develop an independent research program. The team will work to develop and field test a set of methods to evaluate the potential (or lack thereof) for carbon sequestration (e.g., blue carbon value) by natural kelp forests on annual cycles. A priority is to inform science-based kelp forest restoration and conservation, while simultaneously understanding their value for achieving carbon dioxide uptake from the ocean-atmosphere system.

We seek a motivated, broadly thinking scientist to work with a diverse working group studying kelp forest carbon sequestration potential. In addition to this leadership role, intellectual contributions to proposal development, data collection and analysis, and experience in field sample collection are required. We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in research as well as ocean policy and resource economics. We anticipate hiring at the Postdoctoral level but other qualified candidates may be considered. The position will be initially for one year with the possibility of extension for two additional years.

The position requires a Ph.D., in a relevant field, at the time of application, and candidates should have a competitive record of publication. Salary will depend on experience and be based on UCSD pay scales. Interested candidates should send a cover letter, CV and list of references as a single PDF to smithj@ucsd.edu  Applications will be reviewed once received but for full consideration, please apply by Aug 1, 2023.

SIO is a world-renowned center of marine research with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs on all aspects of earth, ocean, biological and atmospheric sciences. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. UCSD is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer with a strong institutional commitment to excellence and diversity (http://diversity.ucsd.edu).
