Student Video Challenge – Congrats Emily Kelly & Matt Siegfried!!

Last month, the Scripps Communications Office and the SIO Department announced their first-ever student video contest!  This was an opportunity for all Scripps students to create short, engaging videos to demonstrate why Scripps matters and why they chose to come here.  Submissions were collected, and voted on by Scripps peers, and the winners will receive $500 each!  Check out all the winners here:2014 Student Video Challenge Winners!

Emily Kelly & Matt Siegfried’s video features a recent trip they took to the Vatican, to attend a workshop entitled: Sustainable Humanity, Sustainable Nature: Our Responsibility.  The purpose of the workshop was not to catalogue environmental problems. Instead, participants viewed Humanity’s interchanges with Nature through a triplet of fundamental, but inter-related Human needs – Food, Health, and Energy – and the Vatican’s respective Academies were asked to work together to invite experts from the natural and the social sciences to speak of the various pathways that both serve those needs and reveal constraints on Nature’s ability to meet them.  Read more about the workshop’s inspiration and purpose here.

Two Scripps graduate students, Matt Siegfried and Emily Kelly, were invited as observers to the workshop. Kelly described it as an incredible experience learning from an illustrious group of people on topics of sustainability, climate change, and human dignity.

“It has been a very exciting experience here and really building so much on my Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation education through discussions with ethicists, anthropologists, glaciologists, sociologists, economists, politicians, biologists, religious leaders, atmospheric chemists, labor organizers, and people of so many more disciplines,” said Kelly.
